A February Message from the Barrington School Building Committee

Dear Barrington Community,

The Barrington School Committee is on track to submit the Stage II Necessity of School Construction application to the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) on or before the February 15th deadline. RIDE will evaluate and respond to the application by the end of May 2024, so that Barrington can sign an MOA and continue moving forward with the school construction project.

The Barrington School Building Committee has worked closely with our consultants, Tecton Architects and Downes Construction Company, to make sure the application meets our standards and educational goals as a community. We are grateful for the continued involvement of the community in our many public meetings, and for the continuous support of our Town counterparts on the Council and financial administration.

Below are some updates on several aspects of the school construction project, including upcoming deadlines and anticipated timelines in the school construction process.

  • School Committee and Town Council Approval
The Barrington School Committee voted on the approval of Stage II on February 1. This Barrington Town Council voted on February 7th to approve the application. Following both of these votes, Barrington’s Stage II application will be submitted to RIDE by February 15, 2024.
  • Projected Project Timeline
The Barrington School Building Committee is working toward the goal of initiating some bond-funded work as early as Summer 2024 while school is out of session. This timeline will enable us to address existing critical needs and set the stage for future construction work.
  • Stage III Application Begins in June 2024
The next phase of the project, subsequent to RIDE Stage II Application approval,  includes three (3) more rounds of designs to get to construction-ready documents. Each phase will require more input from our stakeholders to make sure we remain on track with our goals and the school construction budget. This process will continue to be led by the Barrington School Building Committee with the oversight of the Barrington School Committee.

There are many moving parts to this endeavor and the Barrington School Building Committee is committed to ensuring that we are making informed decisions that prioritize the best interests of Barrington’s students, families, and community members in these critical phases of the school construction project.

Thank you for your continued support,

Chairs of the Barrington School Building Committee
